Texas Contemporary Artists Series: Rex Hausmann

The Texas Contemporary Artists Series exhibitions showcase the talents of some of Texas’ premier artists. This series focuses on the work of contemporary artists who call Texas home. Common to all of their work is the bold vision and unbridled exuberance that is the quintessence of Texan culture. The Texas Contemporary Artists Series is curated by Arturo Almeida, curator for the UTSA art collection.

The latest artist in the series is Rex Hausmann, with his exhibition, "Ithica," inspired by Constantine Cavafy's poem, "Ithaca." The poem speaks of a sailor’s journey and arrival at port, analogous to Hausmann’ time away from San Antonio. His paintings incorporate personal mementos with iconic San Antonio images, such as ButterKrust bread packaging, the Cool Crest miniature golf sign, the Olmos Pharmacy marquee and other landmarks.

Rex Hausmann lives and works as a full-time artist in San Antonio and Brooklyn. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Hausmann has shown and lectured in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Atlanta, and internationally in Ireland, Italy, Mexico and the Bahamas.

Man Ray

(born August 27, 1890 – died November 18, 1976)

Man Ray, born Emmanuel Radnitzky, was an American Artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. Perhaps best described simply as a modernist, he was a significant contributor to both the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. Best known in the art world for his avant-garde photography, Man Ray produced major works in a variety of media and considered himself a painter above all. He was also a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. He is noted for his photograms, which he renamed "rayographs" after himself.

Artist Talk with Jade Townsend

New York sculptor and installation artist Jade Townsend will give an  artist talk at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center on the evening of  Wednesday, August 17th at 6:30 pm.  

Townsend, whose work explores themes of displacement, allegory and  alchemy, has shown extensively in New York, and also been featured in  exhibitions across the US, as well as in Cuba, Germany, and  Switzerland.  Townsend's work was recently featured in the New Image Sculpture exhibition at the McNay in San Antonio.  Jade has recently lectured at Pace University and Parsons The New School for Design.

Jade Townsend is currently collaborating with San Antonio's own AtticRep, acting as a guest artist on their most recent production, SMUDGE, which opens on August 18th.  For more information on AtticRep, visit http://www.atticrep.org/.
