Back to the Grind

We made it! The first week back to school has been hectic for all of us, teachers, students and staff with schedule changes, learning about expectations, class rules and new school policies and procedures. However, we have to get to business right away as we have a lot of projects to cover this semester.

This week I asked my students to create their own sketchbooks using card stock, watercolor, and sharpie markers. The results are fantastic! The sketchbooks are glowing with each students personality.

Welcome Back to School! Are you ready?

Welcome to the new school year! I am thrilled to be starting my second year at Jackson Middle School. I am also looking forward to a year filled with challenges and excitement.

Go Fish! Revisited

Paper Mache' Fish using recycled materials created by Spring 2015 6th grade students at JMS.

Materials used:

Plastic Bottles
Cardboard
Masking Tape
Newspaper
Paper Mache' Glue (Elmer's glue mixed with water)

The Students were evaluated on:

craftsmanship (neatness & sturdiness)
aesthetics (demonstrates principles of art & elements of design such as line, shape, color, texture, etc.)

Recycled Plastic Bottle Masks

For the first project of Spring semester cycle 2, I asked my 8th grade students to create an African Inspired Mask from Recycled Plastic Bottles. It was quite the challenge at first, as we found out that some of the laundry detergent bottles were difficult to cut with scissors. Fortunately, we had a Dremmel tool in class that worked like a charm. I have to say that I am very pleased with the results of this project.

Cardboard Everyday Objects!

After introducing my 7th grade art students to British Artist, Chris Gilmour, I challenged them to create everyday objects using cardboard. The students were stumped at first, but once they got the hang of it, they ran with the project, adding details to their objects that I was not expecting. I am so proud of my students!
