Looking at Contemporary Art

What is contemporary art?

Contemporary Art is art produced at the present point in time. Some art museums and collections define contemporary art as including all art since the end of World War II more specifically since 1945.

Look at the painting below and answer the following questions. **Remember: You must use complete sentences with correct punctuation! **

Ling Jian, Suspension in Melancholy

 1. Does the portrait display an attitude: calm, arrogance,      intelligence, humor? Why?

2.  Do you think the artist has tried to flatter the model, or would you consider the portriat not-so flattering, yet perhaps more revealing of the person's inner personality? Why?

  2. I feel almost defenseless as I look the image over. Her naked and delicate body seem as though she is open and exposed. Her features, her willowy frame, her snowy hair, her nigh-black eyes, and her polished complexion make her look alien and out of place. The single drip of red is startlingly powerful and seems almost insulting. "Why would a creature like this be hurt in such a way?" "Who could do such a thing?" Et cetera.

Though the model is flattered very well in the picture, I don't believe that was intention. The idea seems to be one of disrepair and hope simultaneously. Even the background colour is one of controversy and confused order.

  3. I think that this portrait has an emotion of blank and no feeling what so ever. Mostly because the model is motion less and doesn't have any emotion in her face.

  5. The image strikes me as diginfied and knowing. I feel the girl has suffered, but is strong enough to endure until melancholy of her life gives way to joy and honest comfort. The stream of light trickling in though the upper right corner gives the image an essences of hope and quiet awe.
I think the artist gave the model more live by coloring her eyeshadow differently. I think the image is very flattering, but not in a way which seems over the top. The model strikes me as the kind of person who beautiful, but not vain or even swear of it.

  6. Wow, she looks overly calm, almost dead in away. The portrait makes look extremely creepy and makes her look less flattering.

  7. 1. i think the model is showing a determined face she looks like she trying to accomplish a goal.
    2. i think he was trying to flatter the model because he brought alot of attention to her face by putting makeup on her and made her bright.

  8. The portrait has a far-away, almost longing attitude. You can tell by the way her body is posed to look as if she is going forward to something. Her eyes are widened and portray a starry look to them. Her mouth is agape in wonder. Her cheeks are drained of color so perhaps she is afraid but enamored with what lies ahead.

I think the point was to flatter the model. Her hair is pulled back so that all of the attention is on her face. Her lips are full and colored. Her eyes are made up. Everything was painted so it would stand out.

  9. 1. Yes , cause it looks like shes trying to show us a determined face and to go for her goal. She has some pretty cheeks they are drained of a color. Her lips is are big and they look like you can tell a story about them . Her eyes when you look into them you can just think about stuff you can tell if something wrong or not there really pretty doe (:

    2. The whole point was to make the modle happy. Make her look really beautiful and when they did that , they did a good job she stands out like everything her eyes . skin , lips , hair , her cheek bones everything is good(:

  10. 1. The portrait looks calm, because it looks like something behind the girl is the ocean. It just looks like she is looking at the ocean, and it really brings out the feeling in it.
    2. I think the portrait's very flattering, because of the way the artist made the model. The model's lips, hair, and skin complextion makes the picture even more good. I think what the artist was feeling was that he was very calm when did the picture which I think thats why he made the picture.

  11. 1. The portrait is very beautiful. She looks calm but their is something haging from her mouth. Looks like blood dripping from her mouth. The background looks like an ocean. But she naked and defenceless and on her left eye it looks swollen.

2.Yes, I think the artist tried to flatter the model because he did her hair and her makeup really well. The colors look bright. The skin of her body pops out. Her lips are red as a rose. The artist was probably very calm.

  12. 1. I believe this portrait displays an attitude of confusion. She's staring off into the distance like she's staring at someone. It's seems as though there's almost a "why?" about to come out of her mouth. It's pretty deep.
    2. I do believe it's flattering, yet at the same time it reveals just a sliver of her inner person. Almost like they just want you to see a hint and want you to know more.

  13. This painting gives off an attitude of fear. She has a look that something tragic just happened. She may of gotten hurt without it being expected. She looks like she's looking at someone as if they did something to her. Maybe they made her bleed as you can see in the painting.

She looks as if she just got out of the shower with her hair slicked back and no clothing. It is flattering and makes you wonder what happened. What she is thinking and going thru her mind. It shows her personalty as if she's not a person that goes off on someone and that is nice. She may not be a type to get hurt by something because she may have never done anything wrong.

  14. She looks calm, dead in a way, like something shocking happened to her during the time the painting was made. Also that added line or drip thing looks creepy, out place, it just doesn't belong there.

Well, now that I looked up what "flattering" means again I think she looks flattering to a degree, I mean it makes her look cool, the painting, but also just plain creepy. The painting does sort of reveal her inner personality, maybe she just a calm person who never smiles and thats who she really is but when in public she makes a new facet where she is just a whole new person, instead of who she really is.

  15. 1. Yes. To me, it looks like she's trying to keep confident. The "blood" dripping down her lips might be trying to symbolize some kind of pain she's going through.

    2. I do believe the artist tried to make the painting somewhat unflattering, to show how the kindest looking soul can be in the midst of a bloody, emotional battle.

  16. 1.) I understand that the artist believes that beauty comes with its own pain. They believe that all beauty is superficial. The mood here seems to be a form of self loathing or a very small flaw they work to keep hidden.

2.)The artist has used the model purely as an instrument to symbolize them self as something that many only see as glamorous. They are secretly holding their true selves deep beneath this 'canvas'.

  17. In my opinion, the portrait displays a calm attitude. The colors, texture, and lines give a very stilled, languid feeling. There are some flattering characteristics, such as their beauty and certain colors of their visage (pale skin and rose-red lips). But there is also the image depicted--a fixated look and whatever is coming out of their mouth--which reveals something eerie behind the tranquility. There is also the title of the painting, Suspension in Melancholy. The attitude might be calm, but there is trouble and turmoil in what lies beneath.

  18. 1. I believe this portrait has a calm and confused attitude. The color scheme is very dark, which gives it the calm attitude. This is because darker tones seem to be more relaxing, in my opinion, while as bright tones are more energetic. The portrait also gives off a confused attitude, because of the way the girl is positioned. She looks as if she is confused at what is happened or what she is observing.

    1. 2. I think the artist mean to flatter some parts of the model, but not all of her. The main focus seems to be on her face, which is why the hair is pulled back and most of the color is in her face. The stream of blood, from what it looks like, also draws attention to the face, because it starts from there.

  19. I think the artist made the girl look intelligent, while not over flattering the model.
It was hard to compromise what the red blood like substances meant, I personally saw it as a cut on her lip. I see it as a dancer that maybe had took in a hard fall.

  20. 1.
The lady looks horrified by the black eyes that she has,the blood that is dripping down her lip, seems like she has been through some physical damage, and is ashamed to show that hurt she's going through, she has wonderful eye and skin color. She looks like she's wishing for the pain to go away.

    2.
I would consider the art very flattering, because the chinese lady seems to have very pretty eyes, smooth skin and the look on her eyes seem shocking as they appear for her to express how she feels, she has very nice posture for her lady like art stand.

  21. The attitude gives a calm and intelligent attitude to it as well as this calm beauty being stated. The artist did compliment this model greatly and revealed more of her beauty by pulling her hair back and showing focus on her face but it also shows a hint of personality. I can imagine this model being very quiet but when she speaks the words are hard hitting and witty.

  22. 1. Her facial expression looks really calm. It looks like she's staring off into the distance thinking about something.

    2. This might be showing her true personality. She does look very calm, maybe shes just a calm person. As if nothing really bothers her.

  23. 1.) It looks more like she's in pain because in the painting the women has her mouth open and a small thin that looks like blood and is coming out as if someone stab her and while that's happening it also looks like she thinking like she has a lot in her mind with her eyes open wide with a sparkle in them.

2.) I'll probly have to say that he tryed to make her look flattering. Because the color in her face and the way her eyeshadow is on the corner of her eyes the shadow of pink in her cheeks and lips. To make her look beautiful while she is dieing and in pain.

  24. I think the person in the portrait looks aloof because they look like they're thinking about something. They don't really look like they're actually there. I don't really think the model looks too flattering. She looks like she has a black eye and like she's peeling a piece of her lip off.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1 . I don't think the portrait displays any attitude . She looks scared by the look of her face .

2 . This picture of the model isn't flattering because she has a black eye & he bottom lip is swollen & cut this doesn't make her look flattering .

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1) As i look at this portrait the attitude seems disturbing or more frightening. Looking at the woman in this model she seems like she's calm but yet frightened at the same time. Also when looking at her she has a bruised eye or black eye and the red liquid coming down her mouth describes the attitude and emotion of this picture.

    2) If you really look at the picture i feel like it describes more of her inner personality, she seems frightened. I honestly wouldn't find this model flattering, just by viewing the picture it shows that the woman has some red liquid coming out her mouth , and she also has sort of a black eye i believe.

  27. In my opinion, I think the image of the women looks very calm, considering there is blood dripping for her mouth. Well flattering? Yes, the way she is presenting herself. Her lips, her eyes, look very focused .

  28. This painting is very interesting. It does not only give us a mental but a physical taste as to what we may read within her face. Calm? Yes. Arrogance? Maybe not. Intelligence? Maybe. and humor, I see no such thing. I don't think it's very flattering... I really think that the attitudein the painting is very much whatever the illustrator has in mind. We tend to put our feelings onto our creations. I think this is very much what the artist did. I love the way the eyes look. Her eyes set a mystery that travels on.

  29. 1. By looking at the portrait it show's the emotion of fear, and darkness as if she had went through something bad and the marks stayed with her for the rest of her life. If you look straight at it, you'll see blood coming out of her mouth and you see bruises on her cheek's and a black eye on both eyes.

    2. Not-so flattering only because she probably feels too exposed only because it look's like she has no clothes on. Also her face of fear as if she just got in a bad fight with an ex or boyfriend.

  30. By looking at this i see confusion, sadness, and fear. Like she knows something is going wrong

  31. 1.Shocked, Scared, Surprise. She shocked because her mouth and eyes show expression to being shocked. Scared, she looks beaten her face os breasted must be scared no smile!! Her face looks surprise she naked showing from the shoulders up,no shirt.

2.She's scared. She's been beaten, lips swollen blood dripping, eyes red, blue, purple bruising. No very flattering to show a person/girl so hurt physically. It seems mentally fired as well. For her to have her shirt maybe off. Very skinny and pail.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. She looks scared, uncomfortable, in fear. She has a black eye and her lip is bleeding, just those two things alone can mean she is being beaten or abused.
2.I don't think so, I think he is showing the story of an abused woman. And he is not trying to show her as a beautiful flattered model but as a uncomfortable, abused, mistreated, girl.
